L'enregistrement en haut de cette page est un des rares enregistrements connus de Ronnie Singer, et probablement le seul de lui jouant du jazz. On l'y entend en quintet à New-York prendre de longs chorus bebop sur des standards de l'époque swing. Le sommet de ces bandes est les échanges de quatre mesures sur Shine avec ce trompettiste inconnu (d'après Phil Grenadier, peut-être Don Joseph ou Don Fagerquist). Le solide trio piano-contrebasse-batterie qui les accompagne est aussi inconnu. Son style est comparable à Jimmy Raney ou Tal Farlow dans la fluidité du discours, bien que ses phrases soient différentes et très personnelles. Une copie des bandes (d'un bienfaiteur inconnu) appartenait à feu le guitariste Jimmy Gourley (de Saint Louis, Missouri), contemporain et ami de Ronnie Singer, qui le considérait comme sa plus grande influence, devant Jimmy Raney et Charlie Christian.
Mise à jour (23/02/11): Grâce à Blue Eyes, les bandes ont été baissées d'un demi-ton, elles tournaient trop vite lors de la numérisation. Le son est plus confortable, le timbre plus proche de la réalité; et les morceaux sont maintenant dans des tonalités logiques: Tea For Two en Sol, Indiana en Fa et Shine en Mi bémol.

The recording on top of this page is one of the rare recordings known of Ronnie Singer, and probably the only one of him playing jazz. We can hear him in a New-York-based quintet taking long bebop choruses on standards from the swing era. Highlight of these tapes is the four-bar chases on Shine with this unknown trumpet player (according to Phil Grenadier, maybe Don Joseph or Don Fagerquist). The steady piano-bass-drums trio supporting them is also unknown. His style is comparable to Jimmy Raney or Tal Farlow in the fluency of the language, though his phrases are different and very personal. A copy of the tapes (from an unknown benefactor) were belonging to the late great guitarist Jimmy Gourley (from Saint Louis, Missouri), contemporary and friend of Ronnie Singer, who considered him as his greatest influence, ahead Jimmy Raney and Charlie Christian.
Update (23/02/11): Thanks to Blue Eyes, the tapes have been lowered by a semitone, they were playing too fast during numerizing. The sound is more confortable, the timbre closer to reality; and the tunes are now in logical keys: Tea For Two in G, Indiana in F and Shine in Eb.

    So a semitone lower and a bit slower. Sounds better, more relaxed. I'll rewrite the transcription the same way. G then... B (yikes!).

  7. Man, what a great thing you've done here. A forgotten bit of jazz history given proper recognition. Thanks so much for the education, I was just reading Ira Gitler's Swing to Bop and it's so fascinating to hear that the man has a legacy, even if it is as small as can be.
